The Camp of the Saints - a Devotion for 24 September 2021, Anno Domini

There prevails a popular sentiment in the western countries, especially today, no offense can justify general war. We would prefer to indulge in limited ‘police’ actions rather than mobilize the full resources of the nation and her allies for general war. As a result of this flawed mentality, we are constantly engaging in limited wars around the globe. Instead of investing the enemy at points of his greater concentration, we meet him on the far reaches of his perimeter, and never come to an unconditional victory. Such policies feed the coffers of bankers and investors quite well, but it also assures a continuous conflict at diverse points of our frontiers.

 

            As John Stuart Mill has said: War is an ugly thing but not the ugliest of things; the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feelings which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. A man who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.

 

            War is so pervasive and engrained in the minds of mankind that eventually one must resort to arms to protect life and property. The time may come when governments cannot be relied upon for that protection, or is the source of the threat to liberty, and we will find ourselves at the primitive stage of history in which the burden of protection and liberty must be borne by the individual families.

 

            This worldly system will even end in an all-out general war waged against the Elect of God. And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison, And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea.  And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them.  And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.  (Revelation 20:7-10)   Notice that there will be very few Elect at this last battle. The saints will be garrisoned behind the walls of only a camp, while the armies of the wicked are gathered from the four-quarters of the earth to do battle. But all of the armies of the world are no match for the shore batteries of Heaven. God will be the Victor in this last war. 

 

            You may be wondering what all of this discussion of war has to do with the Christian religion – it has all things to do with faith and life. The resources of our Army are not vested in heavy ordnance and small arms; but rather in the Sword of the Word of God and the Armour of Faith and Courage: Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.  Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.  For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.  Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.  Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;  And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;  Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.  And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:  Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;  (Ephesians 6:10-18)

 

             The enemy we face is deployed in force across the landscape of the earth. The Prince of Darkness is their Commander, and he is totally devoid of pity, honor, or reason. His pawns are made up of a diverse collection of like-minded culprits from the ranks of drunks, the ambitious, politicians, rapists, plunderers, cutthroats, bankers, the military elite in some cases, and the most perverse of all humanity. Unfortunately, the most dangerous offenders who obey this Prince are imposters posing as clergy. The latter have not stood in defense of moral righteousness or the written Word of God. They have capitulated to the Wicked One at all points such as Constitutionally protected prayer in school, the Bible in public places, abortion, and the undermining of the family and Godly marriage. Had the churches stood up in righteous indignation when a decadent gathering of Supreme Court justices ruled school prayer (a matter that had been Constitutionally protected from the first days of our Republic) no longer Constitutional, the outcome would have definitely been different. The silence of the churches was profound! But worse, is the silence of the individual believer. 

 

Are you silent, or do you stand as a watcher on the wall with your Sword unsheathed. 

Psalm 23 Part Three – 23 September 2021, Anno Domini

 

T

HE LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. ² He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. ³ He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. ⁴ Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. ⁵ Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. ⁶ Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.  (Psalm 23:1-6)

 

            All blessings and benefits that accrue to the believer are evidences of that ‘Goodness and Mercy’ granted by the Almighty God to His Elect.

 

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life

 SURELY! Beyond any doubt or question! Even the judgments of God are mercy for His people. His Hand of blessing will follow us everywhere and all the time, even to the end of our earthly journey and, yes, beyond into eternity! Her turns our tribulations into glorious triumph. And His Goodness and Mercy follow us all the days of our lives (which extend beyond the time limits of this world and into the distant eternity future).

 

I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever

We are created for eternity in Christ. Therefore, we will ABIDE with Him in His Paradise FOREVER! The most palatial mansion awaits those who wait upon the Lord. The Home of God is our Home! We will abide there, not as servants, but as sons and daughters forever and forever. All that He owns He has given to His beloved children, but the greatest gift of all will be the fellowship with Christ, with the Holy Spirit, and with God the Father. We shall then eat freely of the fruit of that Tree which was taken from the Garden because of the sin of Adam. We shall dwell together in heavenly places, and love each other and our God.

 

The depth and beauty of this great Psalm is beyond our complete understanding. Each line is a priceless promise. Our attempts to render all of its majestic beauty from the few short lines of it will always be a humiliating failure for God’s every Word is so pregnant with meaning that the depths of the Sea are insufficient to fathom the fullness thereof. Were the oceans made of ink, as the hymn says, there would not be sufficient to write all the goodness and mercy of God on the scroll of Heaven. This Psalm is like a precious gem, or diamond. When held up to the light, one sees striking rays of gleaming blue. Another will see bold shafts of golden beauty. Another observer, looking at the same stone, will see effulgent white, green or red. Is there a disparity of meaning? Do we see the same stone wrongly? Not at all for God is Light. His Light is White and pure. White Light is composed of every color in the rainbow! It takes all colors combined together to produce white. God is all of those Colors. He provides different glimpses of Himself to each of us according to our present need and ability to see.

 

May this Trinity Season be one which climaxes in a multitude of gems of new truth and knowledge for everyone who seeks the face of the Lord.

Psalm 23 Part Two – 22 September 2021, Anno Domini

 

 

T

HE LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. ² He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. ³ He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. ⁴ Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. ⁵ Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. ⁶ Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.  (Psalm 23:1-6)

 

            The dry and thirsty parched earth receives the life-renewing droplets of spring rain in the same way the Christian receives the Water of Life he discovers in the Scriptures. The soul that faints of hopelessness and tribulation is renewed in whole and full by the promises and Spiritual Presence of the Lord in his life. We continue with the 23^rd Psalm we began yesterday.

 

He restoreth my soul - Because we are as sheep compared to the Providence of God, we often fail and falter. We loose confidence in our walk. But He lifts us up and gives us new hope. Are we weary? He encourages us by His Voice –“ just a bit further in the journey and we will have found the new pastures to which I am leading you.” When we are too tired to proceed, He lifts us to His breast and carries us near His Heart just as the shepherds do until this day. His Voice is uniquely different from every other voice and we respond to it as sheep do to their shepherd.

 

He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. - He only leads continually in the right way to sanctify us and improve our lives. As the Psalmist says: “All the paths of the LORD are mercy and truth unto such as keep his covenant and his testimonies." (Psalm 25:10). Through our obedience and righteous living, we glorify our Shepherd. All the other shepherds stand in awe at the orderly and loving company of His flock.

 

thou art with me; For me, this is the most powerful line in the Psalm. I call to the bar the following two witnesses:

 

·      The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up. (Matt 4:16)

 

·      Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death. (John 8:51)

 

The last witness, the Lord Himself, assures us that we may only view the ‘shadow of death’ but a shadow is not the real thing, but only a spectre. The Ark offered complete security for Noah and his family because they stood WITH God. The Ark of Christ is always and forever the safe place. He is with us even in the valley of the ‘shadow of death’. We need not fear for the Shepherd is with us, and where He leads is always to a place of greater and more abundant blessing.

 

Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me - The Shepherd’s Staff is both a Rod and a Staff. The top end has a hook in it to rescue those little lambs who fall in the rocks and crevices. The Shepherd pulls them from places of danger with His staff. But the bottom end of the Staff is a sharpened Rod. It is used to prod the sheep who attempt to wonder into danger. The Lord uses both in leading us in life’s journey. If we remain alert and obedient, the Shepherd will not need the use of either end of His Staff.

 

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies - No matter the presence of strong enemies in the field arrayed against us, the Shepherd will take measures to defend and feed His sheep. He feeds us with the food that is comfortable for us. The greenest grass on the slopes and valleys of pasture is our food. The enemy (wolves, lions, dogs) lurking around the perimeter of the flock cannot eat our food. It is not suitable to them for they must have blood only. So He feeds us before them.

 

Thou anointest my head with oil - He takes time and care to anoint us with the oil of the Holy Spirit. So anointed, we appear refreshed and present a pleasant fragrance by our love and obedience to our Shepherd.

 

My cup runneth over - Certainly, there are moments in which a child of God can barely handle the enormity of love and spiritual blessing flowing from God’s Hand to us. The world often wonders how a Christian can seemingly be overcome with troubles and yet give every evidence of joy and happiness in his state. I have discovered that the best method to dispel sorrow or depression is to sing the Godly and classic old hymns of the church – the same I have heard from my mother’s lips as a child. God does not only fill our Cups ….He fills them to overflowing. As we drink from our cups, they remain still full and still overflowing. His Grace is a well-spring of Living Waters.

 

Psalm 23 Part One – 21 September 2021, Anno Domini

Introduction

            Having paid the price of our sins and redemption, the Lord has emerged from the Garden Tomb victorious. He is now our Shepherd King and Savior.

 

Though the sheep know not where the shepherd may lead, they follow on in faith and trust. The trail is winding and they know not the Way except to understand that He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

 

I wrote the following devotion on the 23^rd Psalm a few years ago; and Hap Arnold posted it to our blog in March of 2011. I feel that it is appropriate to share this devotion again following those of the 22^nd Psalm.

 

The Twenty-Third Psalm – being a Messianic Psalm:

I feel a great reluctance in preparing this devotion on the 23^rd Psalm. Its beauty, majesty, and high spiritual character render it above any human capacity to expand upon. So please regard my commentary thereon as a simple statement of what the Psalm means to me.

 

The LORD is my shepherd - This is the beginning point of every Christian walk – to know and acknowledge Christ as our Shepherd.  He made us, sustains us, and calls us to Him. No other cares for us as He does. All others simply desire to use us and to ruin us in the process; but Christ loves His sheep. He eats, sleeps, and keeps watch with them day and night. He has given His very Life-Blood for them. This, a stranger will not do. He is always conscious of our needs and feeds us.  The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep. The hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep. I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine. (John 10:10-14)

 

I shall not want - All of our needs will be provided by the Shepherd. Those desires we have that will not benefit, but harm us, He will withhold. But our wants (those needs we have to sustain us in our journey and being) He will see to. We are mere sheep and cannot know where the pastures of feeding will be found for the morrow, but He knows and makes provision for our being led to them.

 

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures - Sheep are fickle creatures. They are reluctant to lie down just any place. They will shy away from lying down where they do not feel secure (it is difficult for them to arise due to the structure of their legs). They will not lie down unless they are first fed. They will not lie down where pests will annoy them. They only lie down where they are secure, well-fed, and serene.

 

He leadeth me beside the still waters. - To those who love the Shepherd, all waters are still waters to them. They have peace in spite of the external havoc that may exist around them. The waters of the Lord are still and deep! His provision of the waters of life is boundless and pure. Though we wander in the wilderness of the world, to our eyes and thirst will always be visible the Still Waters of the Lord.

 

Overcoming the Temptations of Life - a Devotion for 20 September 2021, Anno Domini

W

ATCH and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.  (Matthew 26:41)

 

            Temptation and its allurements are constantly the soul’s great enemy and the adversary’s primary weapon to destroy young and old alike. It is a weapon reserved for the Dark Prince of the Air and never employed by the almighty. God tempts no one. Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: (James 1:13)  So, by what means do we encounter temptations? The most common temptation encountered occurs by our own volition. We place ourselves in places where temptations can assail. The small, winged moth may fly closer and closer to the light of the flame, which attracts it, until its wings are consumed and it dies a fiery death.

 

            Our youth often associate with companions who are less than obedient to parents or law. They believe they will not be drawn into the same by those associations; however, in time, the good will be contaminated with the bad in sin. 

 

            How to Avoid Temptation

Avoid circumstances in which temptation is known to exist. I love chocolates and sweets of all varieties; so, I must not surround myself with such since I may be tempted to partake of them. The same is true of sinful employments. Avoid events and people whom you know will tempt you to do, say, or think something not consistent with a Godly character. One tiny surrender to sin will inevitably lead to a greater one as in the case of King David’s temptation to indulge Bathsheba and later felt compelled to have her husband, Uriah, killed in battle to cover his own sins. If the voice of your conscience speaks against the goodness of an act, avoid it while it is in the bud. Our Lord was tempted in the same wise as each of us, yet, He never succumbed to temptation. For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted. (Hebrews 2:18), and For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. (Hebrews 4:15)   We are vessels of clay and are weak. We may sin, but we have a forgiving Father.

 

            When Tempted, Use the Word of God

When Jesus was driven by the Spirit into the wilderness for forty days and nights, He was tempted by the Devil. In His response to each temptation, our Lord quoted Scripture – IT IS WRITTEN! At last, the Devil departed from Him because the Word of God overcomes the intrigues of the Devil. I have found this the most effective approach in my own life to quench the sinful urge to yield to every temptation. When you first feel tempted, move away immediately from the source. Remaining at the source only weakens your resistance. Pray for strength to avoid the Tempter and the temptation. There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. (1 Corinthians 10:13)

 

            Sources of Temptation

Pride: Pride is the father of all sins and was the sin that led to Lucifers fall. It is the first of the seven cardinal sins – see Proverbs 6:16-19 Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall. (Proverbs 16:18)There is a measure of pride involved in every sin under the sun. It is not difficult to find temptation – it lies before our steps everywhere – in the air, in nature, in words, in pictures, in gossip, in certain music, and, yes, even in the Church.

 

            Overcome Evil with Goodness

I fear for my country and her people when I consider the next verse: Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! (Isaiah 5:20) That which God has ordained, we have discredited and given dignity to such perversions as He has condemned. 

 

            One white lie may lead to a thousand of increasing magnitude. In our daily walk, let us remember who we are – we are princes and princesses of the King of Kings. Our actions reflect on the dignity and sovereignty of our Father. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.  (Matthew 5:16)  Light, no matter its intensity, will always disperse the darkness that has no power to resist it.  Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.  (Romans 12:21)

Sermon – Reverend Jack Arnold - Time and Action

Church of the Faithful Centurion - Descanso, California

Today’s sermon tied the Collect, Epistle and Gospel together and talked, as is oft the case, of the need for action, not simply diction.

Consider the words of the Collect, “…let thy continual pity cleanse and defend thy Church; 
and, because it cannot continue in safety without thy succour, preserve it evermore by thy help and goodness …”

 

When the Collect talks about the church, just like last week, it is not talking about buildings; it is talking about us.   Each of us; all of us and together.  We need God’s help (pity) to keep the group of us together following His Will, for without His Help (Holy Ghost) we are doomed to utter failure.  We can see this in the church today. The collect says we need His pity to cleanse our church of error and keep it on the straight and narrow. For without the cleansing effect of His pity and help of the Holy Ghost, error creeps in and corrupts the Church. 

 

We can see this today with many churches leaving the established doctrine of 2 millennia to try to be cool and attract more people. Their efforts are in vein as we are called to be separated from this world and not a part of it, to be holy. They are becoming un-holy and it shows in their more paganistic doctrines. You can barely distinguish some of these churches doctrines from what more worldly or other religions believe and they can hardly be considered a Christian church. God is about quality of believers and not about quantity! These churches covet quantity over quality and are willing do compromise on non comprisable beliefs in order to do so. They gain the world but they lose their souls to do so. It does not sound like a good trade off to me.

 

The problem for many people is Heaven is at the end of a hard and narrow uphill trail; the easy downhill trail does not lead to the summit.  That seemingly easy way leads to The Pit. This easy downhill trail snares a lot of people and there will be sadly some that never realize this. It can ensare anybody so we have to be on our guard lest we start down that path ourselves. This proves the truth of this collect, that without His help, we are doomed. With His help, we are set for success for evermore.  He offers; do we accept?

 

Saint Paul points out if we will open our hearts to God, He will send the Holy Ghost to fill our hearts with Love, Courage, Inspiration, Tenacity and Confidence, all of the good traits that will help our character development. Once the Holy Ghost enters into us, we will know the full dimensions of Christ, the height, width and depth of His love for us, and this fullness will fill us to our content, and we will want to spread that Good News and Love of Him to others.  Without the Holy Ghost, we are doomed. But with the Holy Ghost acting in us, there is nothing that we cannot accomplish for Him. We have to recognize this and make the decision to allow Him into our hearts.

 

Allowing His love for us to enter into our hearts is part of the Good News. The Good News is that He died for us so we might have eternal life, a happier life here and a happier life after our life here.  But the key is we have to first open our hearts to God. We cannot have any of these positive characteristics if we do not allow Him in. We have to be humble and realize we cannot get through life without these characteristics, which means we cannot have a good and successful life without His Help. 

 

He offers all of these things for our benefit, so we will be successful for Him. We have to accept this offer by opening our hearts to Him.  One of my favorite cartoon strips Calvin and Hobbes, oft has great moral lessons.   Calvin’s dad so very often reminds Calvin that doing one’s duty in the face of adversity builds character.  It also strengths the soul building trust in God.  If we will open our hearts to Him, our ears will hear the command “… Arise.”  When we rise, we rise with the confidence of immortals and can conquer any obstacle. We will have died in our old sinful ways and be resurrected like our Lord in a new spirit and a new birth of everlasting freedom. But, without an open heart, our ears will never hear the command directed to our soul, “… Arise.”  We will be dead to eternity. There are none so deaf as those who will not hear. 

 

All Jesus asks is that we follow Him.  That is all follow Him.  But, words mean something; the word follow is very important.  We have to trust God is like a perfect CFI^[1] and if we follow his instructions at the right time, we will keep ourselves from physical and spiritual harm. Like the CFI he is here to keep us from mentally and spiritually harming ourselves. If we will listen to His instructions, we will keep our mental and spiritual selves intact and be a lot happier for it. 

 

We need recognize who has the ability, the power, the perfection in leadership and have that trust to say, "You lead; I'll follow." I believe that is what Jesus expects from us in regard to our entire life. We may get out of position or even go lost wingman on the odd occasion, but he expects us to Our very best to follow His lead and stay in position.  Hard to do if your eye is not padlocked on Him.

 

As ministers of our Lord, we have a similar responsibility to those who would follow us here on earth.  And we have to work even harder, for created by a perfect God, we are imperfect creatures with free will.  A problematic combination.  We have to strive to do better than most as we are in a position where people will be watching our actions more carefully than other people. We must strive for a correct attitude, heading, stability and predictability in our path so we can be followed towards that final destination marking a successful mission. We must always be checking our navigational instruments of the Holy Scriptures and our navigator, the Holy Ghost, to ensure we are on the right heading. We have to be willing to act for Him to show that we truly do have faith and not just say that we have faith. It is a lot easier to say than do, that is for sure.  

 

When Saint Luke relates the story of the Widow of Nain, it is more than just a simple miracle.  

 

In those days, a widow with only one son had little, a widow with no son was in deep trouble.  Jesus took compassion on her and also took the opportunity to make His power evident.  He came to the bier, and touched it saying, “Young man, I say unto thee, Arise.”  The young man arose and began to speak; whereupon Jesus brought him to his mother.  Not surprisingly, news of this event was spread “forth throughout all Judæa, and throughout all the region round about.”  Like the young man, we are dead to eternity until we hear the command “… Arise.”  If we hear and act on that command, we have eternal life, just like the young man, it starts right then! Eternal life doesn't start when you take your last breath, it starts when you take your first breath! Think through your life like it will be eternity and plan your actions accordingly.

 

Also, please take note Jesus ACTED.  He did not just tell the widow He was sorry, so very sorry; He actually did what He could to help her.  He can do more than we can, but we can do more than we do and we can certainly do more than just talk.  Words are very nice, but do not mean a whole lot unless they are backed by actions.

 

If we truly have faith, then we must follow Jesus’s example and live our life like He lived His, with action! We must have good actions that will follow with that faith. If we only speak with our lips and do not have good actions, then we do not have any faith. However, if we do truly have faith, then we will speak the right things and do the right things.

 

Action, not diction, is what counts in the end.

The time is now, not tomorrow.  The time has come, indeed.  How will you ACT?
