Elohim – The First Cause – 9 June 2023, Anno Domini

I

the beginning God created the heaven and the earth(Genesis 1:1)

             The fourth word of the Holy Bible in the Hebrew is Elohim (Eloy – heem). Elohim is the Hebrew word for God used in the first verse of the Book of Genesis – In the beginning, God (Elohim). Why is this term significant? As I have before commented, this name of God has particular meaning for the Triune nature of God. It is an exceptional name in that there is no equivalent in English. Elohim is a plural/singular – meaning more than one in One. It refers the Trinity of Father, Son and Holy Ghost, all present and active in the Creation of the world, and all constituting the Godhead

            The Holy Spirit moved upon the face of the waters. . . .  The Holy Spirit is co-eternal with the Father and the Son existing in eternity past from before the worlds were made. Our Pre-Incarnate Lord was likewise present with the Father at Creation. In fact, He acted as the executive power at the beginning of Creation: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. The Word is a perfect picture of our Lord Jesus Christ who was made flesh and dwelt among us(John 1:14)

            All three Persons of the Godhead are borne out in a close study of the use of the term ‘God,’ as referring to the Father and the Son in John 1. The WORD was with God (the Father and the Holy Spirit) and WAS God – all Three comprise the three-dimensional character of God as Three Persons in One.

            We have an excellent example of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost, working in their united action of power, in Psalm 62. We find Elohim active in the following seven areas of our life of faith mentioned in this Psalm:

Salvation

God (Elohim): from him cometh my salvation. It is the Father who places His chosen into the hands of the Son, and the Holy Spirit that draws that chosen vessel to Christ. Christ redeemed the elect through his sacrifice at Calvary – all Three had a particular role in drawing us to the bosom of God.

Our expectation

My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him(v 5) Our expectation from God is that we shall be shielded, comforted, and made worthy though the blood of our Lord.

Protection

In God is my salvation and my glory (v 7) God is our High Tower and our sure defense. We can glory only in Him as Elohim.

Power

We acquire from God our courage and strength to persevere under trying circumstances.  God is the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God. (v 7) Without God, we are nothing. We may be a Caesar or a Napoleon, but without God we are dross.

Safety

God will satisfy our every need. Our trust in Him is reciprocated by His love and care for us: Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us(v 8)

Revelation

The Word of God is our Chart and Compass to direct our paths on the Seas of Life. God hath spoken(v 11) God reveals His will to us through the Revelation of His Word. We have the fullness of His revelation to us revealed in the completed text of the Holy Bible. The Word and its revelation cannot be amended or added to by man. It is Holy.

Possession

Those of saving faith and grace are subject of God. They Belong to Him and to no other. They hear His Voice and He calls them by name. power belongeth unto God(v 11) Not SOME power, but ALL power. He possesses all power and His elect are solely His and kept by that ultimate power.

            In each reference to God in the above Psalm, the Hebrew term ‘Elohim’ is used. The Love of God streams from the Godhead Undivided. The Mind and Purpose of God is wholly vested in the Trinity of God without division.

            We all understand our Lord Jesus Christ purchased our salvation on the cross; but we may forget God the Father paid an unbearable price as well in giving His only Begotten Son a ransom to those who were yet at enmity with God. The role of the Holy Spirit, too, is to make alive the dead sinner’s heart and draw him to the Throne of Mercy and Grace. (see Ephesians 2)

            Just as every particle of matter must occupy a three-dimensional space, so must the Godhead be defined by the Three Persons of the Godhead as One. But the dimensions of those Three are infinite in all directions encompassing all of Creation.

Sermon of the Deep – 8 June 2023, Anno Domini

T

HY throne is established of old: thou art from everlasting. The floods have lifted up, O Lord, the floods have lifted up their voice; the floods lift up their waves. The Lord on high is mightier than the noise of many waters, yea, than the mighty waves of the sea(Psalm 93:2-4)

            There is an unfathomable depth in the Deep of God’s Love and Providence for His people. As the beloved hymn goes:

Could we with ink the ocean fill,

and were the skies of parchment made;

were ev’ry stalk on earth a quill,

and everyone a scribe by trade;

To write the love of God above

would drain the ocean dry;

nor could the scroll contain the whole,

though stretched from sky to sky.

            The Bible often ascribes, symbolically, voices of praise to heavenly bodies and trees, etc. The same is true of the sea. The sea has a voice in its tumultuous billows and stormy gales. But it is also implicitly obedient to the laws of nature with which God has established its boundaries.  . . . who shut up the sea with doors, when it brake forth, as if it had issued out of the womb(Job 38:8) That, in itself, is an unwritten sermon to the Christian to be obedient to His Maker and Redeemer. God has established boundaries of acceptable conduct for His people to which we must conform if we will claim allegiance to our Lord, Savior, and King.

            Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts: all thy waves and thy billows are gone over me.  (Psalm 42:7) I have written often of the profundity of this verse. There are deep mysteries shrouded in mystery of the things of God that have yet to be revealed to His people, but we can rest assured – all that is needful for our faith and salvation has been fully revealed between the pages of the Holy Bible. But even so, from a purely academic stance, even those revelations remain a mystery revealed fully only to those who seek the truth in earnest faith and to whom the Holy spirit will guide into all truth.

            The deep of the human heart is that which responds to the deep of Love of God as an echo of that love with which He first loved us. We love him, because he first loved us(1 John 4:19) The Great Ocean Deep of God’s love is a mighty reservoir of the Waters of Life that overflow the Christian heart. If our hearts have become the Temple of God, then the love that is manifested from that fountain should be a semblance of His love for us.

            The depths of the sea are repository to more dead than any other cemetery of the world. Many nameless bodies are dispersed across the ocean deeps awaiting the same resurrection day as those graves of land dwellers. Seaman and sea captains, innocent passengers and men of war all share the same grave of the ocean caves. I very much like the words expressed by Thomas Gray in elegy concerning the Ocean deep:

Full many a gem of purest ray serene,

The dark, unfathomed caves of ocean bear;

Full many a flower is born to blush unseen

And waste its sweetness on the desert air.

Just as every human being born to woman shares a common grave on land and sea, so do all share a day of resurrection. Just as many of the race are buried in earthy tombs, many others in the waters of the sea. So shall many be resurrected to a Heavenly realm and others to the heart of the earth and to the eternal punishment awaiting all sinners who reject their Lord and Maker.

The sea contains many secrets that we shall never grasp, but one thing we know, its mighty waves and persistent tides obey the primitive commands of the Creator. Their limits are set firmly just as all other of the natural laws apply to our world. God made both the Natural Laws and those Commandments He scribed with His own Finger to Moses at Sinai. Do we obey those commands as readily as the Ocean Seas obey theirs?

The counsel of the ungodly – 7 June 2023, Anno Domini

B

LESSED is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.  Psalm 1:1)

            According to the preacher of Ecclesiastes, The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun. Nothing has truly changed since the days before the flood and And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually(Genesis 6:5) But the wicked inclinations of man are tempered by just laws duly enforced. When those laws become the tools of despots, certainly the blinders fall away from justice and havoc is the result. Usually, such havoc is attended by persecution of the righteous, famine, general warfare outside the borders of a nation, licentiousness, and debilitating diseases of mind and body.

            Perversions of the vilest forms are, today, being foisted upon the innocent minds of our youth from early childhood. We may take the first lines of Psalm 1 as a perfect warning for our day. Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! The warning from Isaiah ads solemnity to the warning of David in the Psalm. We are at a critical point in the history of the world. The wickedness is no longer a national matter, but rather a general, global development. It is beyond the limited mind of man to generate such unity of evil at once across the global horizon, not because man’s mind is incapable of devising such evil, but it lacks the intellectual capacity of an evil personage in the character of Satan. He has simply fed the wicked ambitions of evil men with the blueprints of execution.

            We may take the dual warning of Psalm 1 and Isaiah 5 as a particular warning for our age. Many of tender age are lured away from truth and love by the false light of the dismal swamp. The primary tool for such indoctrination is an education system that usurps parental rights in favor of indoctrination of profound immorality and hate. Divisions are encouraged thereby for every group to hate every other. Following that false glimmer generated by sewer gases of rotting matter, our upcoming generations end up lost in the smothering darkness of unnatural affections and a failure of compassion.

            This deplorable circumstance has arisen from the silence of churches and their following who failed to take a stand while the fires of subjugation to evil depravity were merely a spark on the timbers of Liberty. Now, those sparks have risen to an all-engulfing fire storm of hate and perversion.

            The judgment of God waited during the days before Noah until the iniquity of the people was completely indefensible. The modern-day scene can scarcely be much more deserving of judgment, and perhaps more so, than those days before the flood. Our Lord gave us a solemn warning concerning the rampant sins of our day: 26 And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man.27 They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all28 Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded29 But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all30 Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed.

            This morning as I sat at my desk, I suddenly was filled with a profound remorse for my country, my friends, my children, my grandchildren, and my fellow citizens as I considered our present state of rampant worldwide evil – an evil that has begun to predominate as a government and corporation-sponsored immorality and darkness even in our beloved country who, in times past, has been so richly blessed by God. We began years ago to cast the Author of our Liberty without the gate and have embraced that immorality of a man-centered religion. Call it what you may – humanism, diversity-equity- inclusion, and false science of medicine and environmental chaos caused by men and animals.

            The insidious prevailing philosophies of subjugation and population control may have reached the tipping point of God’s judgment. It may be unstoppable; however, as Christians, we are commanded to stand fast, hold the line, and suffer whatever persecution may ensue. Take the counsel of our Lord and not that of the ungodly: It is impossible but that offences will come: but woe unto him, through whom they come(Luke 17:1)

AOC Sunday Report - Trinity Sunday

Happy Trinity Sunday!

The AOC Sunday Report can be downloaded RIGHT HERE!

We have excellent sermons today from Bishop Roy, as well as Revs Jack and Brysn. Not surprisingly there is a fair amount of talk in the sermons about the Father, Son and Holy Ghost.  Rev Jack brings the Propers together today.    His sermon is below the propers and can be viewed on video HERE -> https://youtu.be/dynuzaWhIz0

In the Collect, we acknowledge there is a Triune God, that is to say there are three aspects of God; God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Ghost. A Triune God means literally Three in One, not three separate Gods or godlets, but a single being with three aspects. How does this work?  The honest answer is – WE DON’T KNOW, but there is more.  The text serving as this morning’s Epistle came from the Book of Revelation and describes Heaven.  Heaven is the real world, so how do we get to the real world from these Shadowlands? There is but one way, Jesus Christ the righteous; and he is the Propitiation for our sins.  In the Gospel, Jesus tells us what we need to do to get into heaven.  It all comes together.  Having trouble visualizing that?  Read or listen to Rev Jack’s sermon.

There are as usual a lot people who need your prayer, please start with Shamu, Tricia, Laurie and work out from there.  While you are there, please give a prayer of thanksgiving for our Presiding Bishop Jerry Ogles who celebrated his birthday yesterday!

It looks to be an epic week or so ahead, are you having difficulty visualizing that? If so, you might want to consider looking to God for guidance. He will help you see the wonder that is going to come into your world in the next week or so.

Godspeed,

Trinity Sunday.

The Collect.

A

LMIGHTY and everlasting God, who hast given unto us thy servants grace, by the confession of a true faith, to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity, and in the power of the Divine Majesty to worship the Unity; We beseech thee that thou wouldest keep us stedfast in this faith, and evermore defend us from all adversities, who livest and reignest, one God, world without end. Amen.

This morning’s Epistle was written in the Fourth Chapter of the Revelation of Saint John the Divine beginning at the First Verse.  John attempts to show us the majesty and glory of heaven using words.  The picture he paints is intended to be awe inspiring and seems to meet that goal handily:

A

FTER this I looked, and, behold, a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter. And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne. And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald. And round about the throne were four and twenty seats: and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting, clothed in white raiment; and they had on their heads crowns of gold. And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God. And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal: and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, were four living creatures full of eyes before and behind. And the first was like a lion, and the second like a calf, and the third had a face as a man, and the fourth was like a flying eagle. And the four living creatures had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come. And when those living creatures give glory and honour and thanks to him that sat on the throne, who liveth for ever and ever, the four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying, Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are, and were created.

Today’s Gospel came from the Third Chapter of the Gospel according to Saint John beginning at the First Verse:

T

HERE was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: the same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old?  Can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born? Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit. Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be? Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness. If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things? And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life

THE EXHORTATIONS.

       At the time of the Celebration of the Communion, after the prayer for the whole state of Christs Church, the Priest may say this Exhortation. And Note, That the Exhortation shall be said on the First Sunday in Advent, the First Sunday in Lent, and Trinity Sunday.

D

EARLY beloved in the Lord, ye who mind to come to the holy Communion of the Body and Blood of our Saviour Christ, must consider how Saint Paul exhorteth all persons diligently to try and examine themselves, before they presume to eat of that Bread, and drink of that Cup. For as the benefit is great, if with a true penitent heart and lively faith we receive that holy Sacrament; so is the danger great, if we receive the same unworthily. Judge therefore yourselves, brethren, that ye be not judged of the Lord; repentyou truly for your sins past; have a lively and stedfast faith in Christ our Saviour; amend your lives, and be in perfect charity with all men; so shall ye be meet partakers of those holy mysteries. And above all things ye must give most humble and hearty thanks to God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, for the redemption of the world by the death and passion of our Saviour Christ, both God and man; who did humble himself, even to the death upon the Cross, for us, miserable sinners, who lay in darkness and the shadow of death; that he might make us the children of God, and exalt us to everlasting life. And to the end that we should always remember the exceeding great love of our Master, and only Saviour, Jesus Christ, thus dying for us, and the innumerable benefits which by his precious blood-shedding he hath obtained for us; he hath instituted and ordained holy mysteries, as pledges of his love, and for a continual remembrance of his death, to our great and endless comfort. To him therefore, with the Father and the Holy Ghost, let us give, as we are most bounden, continual thanks; submitting ourselves wholly to his holy will and pleasure, and studying to serve him in true holiness and righteousness all the days of our life. Amen.

Sermon  Reverend Jack Arnold - Time and Action

Todays sermon brought the Collect, Epistle and Gospel together and is partly contained in the forewords above.

Todays sermon covers the basic concept of the Triune God, that is the Father, Son and Holy Ghost and how they were introduced to us through time and the Bible in particular; it draws the Collect, Epistle and Gospel together and is partly contained in the forewords above.  .

Consider these words from the Collect:

 acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity, and in the power of the Divine Majesty to worship the Unity

In the Collect, we acknowledge there is a Triune God, that is to say there are three aspects of God; God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Ghost.  A Triune God means literally Three in One, not three separate Gods or godlets, but a single being with three aspects.  How does this work?

The honest answer is  WE DONT KNOW.  We have not been told of how this Being operates. We just have been told there are three and They are ONE.  We have some knowledge and scriptural guidance on how parts of the thing work, but not all.  Saint Paul told the people of Corinth, 12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. (1 Corinthians 13:12)One of the basic principles of classified information is it is only to be revealed to those who have an actual NEED TO KNOW, not just the curious.  Like many secrets, we dont really have a need to know, so we have not been told.  Knowledge of the inner workings of the Trinity is not needed for us to be followers of God.

What we do know is:

·      God is I AM;

·      God the Father sent The Son to be our Savior, He was there at the beginning and created this world;

·      The Holy Ghost breathed life into the world, and brings understanding, comfort, strength, perseverance, courage, inspiration, patience;

·      They all have always been and always will be.

That is what we know; it leaves a lot we dont know, but we can certainly be kept busy with what we do know.  What we do know is that what we have is enough for the here and now. It should enough for us to operate on His Word with our simple and limited understanding of the Trinity. We must be content with what we read in Scripture, all the other stuff we wonder about Him are just extraneous details, like how many angels can dance on the head of a pin?  So much theological discussion is captured in that term.  So, how many angels can dance on the head of a pin?  Whatever the number, the answer from our standpoint is so very simple; As many as God determines the circumstances require.  Note, as God requires!  Not you, not me.  God.  Trying to think about those intricate details that we do not know or understand only serves as a distraction from following God and doing what He asks. He does not want us to speculate on how the Three in One concept works, but rather just understand it is and go forth and follow Him to the best of our abilities.

We must put aside the thoughts of who and what God is, and just understand He is I AM, there is God, there is the Son, there is the Holy Ghost and they all work together in their own way to be the one God of our faith. Any more thought than that is counter productive and digs us into rabbit holes of theological discussion that we do not need to delve into. This rabbit hole digging does not help our faith, only hurt it. If God has told us that He is a Triune God, then we must simply accept it and not try and figure out the inner workings. Why do we feel the need for details when Jesus just asks to believe, 2 And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them, 3And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.  (Matthew 18:2-3)

You dont need to know how may angels can dance on the head of the pin, just that a sufficient number can and will at the right time,

But, what of later?  If we have eternal life, we have it now and later. Eternal life doesnt just start when we leave this Earth, it starts when we accept Him into our hearts. What comes later?  Heaven.  What is heaven?  In the epistle John attempts to describe to us what Heaven is like.  He attempts to show us the majesty and glory of heaven using words.  The picture he paints is intended to be awe inspiring and seems to meet that goal handily.  The main thing we can be certain of is that we will not be disappointed.  We speculate as to will this or that be in heaven?  When we get there, the answer will manifest itself and you will have no regrets.  Johns description should serve to tell us heaven will easily surpass all of our expectations. He is trying to convey Heaven is a destination truly worth our earthly toils. He is not trying to show exactly one to one scale detail how Heaven looks like, only convey how majestic it is and that it is worth all the suffering and trials we have endured on Earth. Heaven is the real world, where things are bright, not dull and dark as though looking through a glass.  Rest assured, we will see for ourselves what it is like one day, all we need to know is that it is a really wonderful place we should be aiming to go to when we die, through our belief and actions here on earth working together!

As to the details of heaven, think about the angels dancing on the head of a pin.  The only detail I can give you with complete certainty is you will not be disappointed, nothing will be lacking,  there will be no disappointment.

So, how do we get to the real world from these Shadowlands?  There is but one way, Jesus Christ the righteous; and he is the Propitiation for our sins.[1]

Do not be fooled by there are many paths to God which seems to be the way of the world today, there is only one way into heaven.  All roads do not lead to heaven. Many lead to the pit, but out of the many roads, there is only one narrow uphill path which will get you to heaven. Doing good is good, so to speak; doing good without God is not good enough.  Only being accounted perfect will get you up the path and in the door.

One thing is clear, in order to traverse this narrow uphill trail we need help!  Lots of help as a matter of fact.  The first thing we need in our hearts is a new heart, a new and contrite heart.  This is what Jesus was telling Nicodemus in the Gospel. He was explaining how we need a new heart in order to continue to serve God. Our old heart cannot serve God.  The Pharisees could not or would not see that their hearts were not good enough on their own to serve Him, as ours are not if they are not regenerated. That is really hard, in fact, it is so hard it cannot be done by ourselves.  We need something like turning over a new leaf so to speak. There is a way as a matter of fact for us to do this.

We must be born of the spirit to get the new heart to serve God!  What spirit?

The Holy Ghost.  We must accept we in and of ourselves will never be perfect. No matter how hard we try, we will never be perfect, so we must understand this fact right away. We must also understand that because of our free will and imperfect nature, our hearts as they are will not lead us towards God, but away from God unless we have the help of the Holy Ghost! No one gets in to heaven unless they are accounted as perfect.  We will never be perfect in and of ourselves.  Should we quit trying?  No!  We are commanded to follow our Christ.  Will we fail?  Without question.  What is the solution?  To believe and follow the Christ.  To open our hearts to the Holy Ghost that we might believe in full and accept the help from the Christ that our imperfection needs to be His followers.

To follow God, we need Christ as our leader and the Holy Ghost as our compass. In short, we need all members of the Trinitys influence in our lives if we are to arrive in the real world, that of Heaven.

There is but one way to heaven.

That easy to find, easy to follow, easy to hike path does not lead to the summit where eternal life in the real world awaits.  Open your heart to the Holy Ghost; use His Power to follow our Lord to God who awaits in heaven.

Heaven is at the end of an uphill trail.  The easy downhill trail does not lead to the summit.

The time is now, not tomorrow.  The time has come, indeed.  How will you ACT?

It is by our actions we are known.

Be of God - Live of God - Act of God

All that they had – 2 June 2023, Anno Domini

A

ND Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much. 42 And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing. 43 And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, "Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury:" 44 "For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living." (Mark 12:41-44)

            When we consider the term ‘ALL,’ it is often viewed in the sense of material possessions but that is not the ‘ALL’ that God requires of His elect. God owns all things in both Heaven and on earth. He needs no material riches, but He does desire our Heart for, with the Heart, comes all things precious in the eyes of God. “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." (Matthew 6:21) If your treasure is in Heaven, there will be your heart also, and God holds your all in safe deposit.

            Isaac, only beloved son of Abraham, is a type of Christ in many points. He was the only son of promise to Abraham. He was to be offered up on Mount Moriah – the same mount upon which Christ was crucified. He carried his own wood up the mount for the sacrifice. But God withheld the hand of Abraham from sacrificing Isaac. God would provide His own only Begotten Son for the sacrifice some 1400 years hence. “And Abraham gave all that he had unto Isaac.” (Genesis 25:5) God did the same for His Son, Jesus: “The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand.” (John 3:35)

            Egypt in Scripture represent the land of bondage in sin. Unlike Lot’s wife, Abraham left nothing in Egypt and did not look back: “And Abram went up out of Egypt, he, and his wife, and all that he had . . . ” (Genesis 13:1)

Giving your all to God is evidence of trusting faith. There is no dollar-mark on it for it is more than any sacrifice – it is love. Potiphar, the master of Joseph in Egypt, trusted Joseph explicitly and put all his holdings in Joseph’s hands: And it came to pass from the time that he had made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had.” Genesis 39:5a When we place all of our trust in Christ, our rewards will be hundreds-fold. Because of that trust in Joseph, “the Lord blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake; and the blessing of the Lord was upon all that he had in the house, and in the field.” (Genesis 39:5b)

There is no means of payment to God for our sins either through our works or our earthly treasure. We find this illustrated in the following text: 23Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, which would take account of his servants." 24 "And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, which owed him ten thousand talents." 25 "But forasmuch as he had not to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made."  (Matthew 18:23-25) The mercy that the Lord gives must be reflected as well in the mercy we show others (in love).

All that we have is seldom enough even for the needs of this world. The woman taken with an issue of blood and had spent all that she had on doctors for twelve years and was none the better for it: “And a certain woman, which had an issue of blood twelve years, 26 And had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse.” (Mark 5:25-26) All THINGS that we have is never enough compared to the riches we may deposit in Heaven. Our next “All that she had” bears out the truth of that principle.

We all are familiar with the story of the ‘Widow’s Two Mites.’ That phrase as become a popular description of someone who has given it their all! 41 ¶And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much. 42 And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing. 43 And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, "Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury:" 44 "For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living." This widow had not given out of an excess, but out of her all – all her money, all her living, and all her heart.  It was because she had given all her heart that she was able to give all her living. That does not mean that our heavenly blessings are based on how much we put in the offering plate at church, but whether or not we have placed our treasures in Heaven to include our HEART – Our “All we HAD!”

Afar Off – 1 June 2023, Anno Domini

T

HEN took they him, and led him, and brought him into the high priest’s house. And Peter followed afar off.  (Luke 22:54)

            It is possible to be Christian but also to have wandered afar from the will and presence of the Lord. The most illuminating example is the Prodigal Son who, while remaining a son, nonetheless went into a far country out of the will and presence of his father. He did not receive the blessings of a son until his penitent return.

            The manly fisherman, Peter, was courageous in the presence of our Lord, but once separated from Jesus in the Garden at Gethsemane, Peter became a frail and cowardly denier of Christ. Even in the courtyard of the High Priest, though very close to Christ physically, he was afar off spiritual as he denied the Lord the third time. And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. And Peter went out, and wept bitterly(Luke 22:61-62) Though near as a congregant at church. Like many congregants, they are far removed from our Lord spiritually.

            A demon-possessed man saw Jesus from afar and came running to Him: But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him (Mark 5:6)  Regardless how far away we are from our Lord, the way is always open for us to come running to Him with our hurts and sorrows.

            Though our sins are as filthy rags, our Lord is forever willing to wash us clean with the redemptive blood He shed on the cross for us. And it came to pass, as he went to Jerusalem, that he passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee. And as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood afar off: And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us(Luke 17:11-13)

Even those who express no gratitude receive the blessings of our Redeemer, but only one out of the ten returned to express gratitude and to worship the Lord. The same is true in our society at large. Many blessings of the faith are enjoyed by members of society who fail to acknowledge Him in all things.

            Our beginnings in Christ must, by the nature of our sinful dispositions, originate in a place afar off from Him. Sin separates us from God as far as the east is from the west, yet, our first step to bridge that distance is to acknowledge our wretched conditions as the publican who came to the Temple to pray along with a Pharisee who, those closer in proximity, was further away from God than the poor, sinful publican: 10Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publicanThe Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publicanI fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possessAnd the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner(Luke 18:10-13)

            Both Jew and Gentile are afar off from God without Christ to redeem them from their wretched and sinful natures: For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call(Acts 2:39) Note: God calls those who He is pleased to call and the Holy spirit quickens their dead hearts to life. But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ (Acts 2:13), and Paul adds, And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby: 17 And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh(Acts 2:16-17)

            Remember the events of Mount Calvary. The disciples whom our Lord considered His close friends fled afar when He was taken. This must have happened of necessity for He must have died alone! Even the women who loved our Lord dearly watched from afar: And many women were there beholding afar off, which followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him. Matthew 27:55 These latter were women of his native province of Galilee who removed from standing by as He died for them. But love compelled the beloved disciple John to stand with the very women who loved Christ more intimately at the very foot of the cross. When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son! Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! (John 19:26-27)

            Our last afar off example comes from the Old Testament Saints beginning at Abraham to whom the promise of a Messiah was clearly given. He believed by faith on the future promise and was as much a Christian as any living: These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth(Heb 11:13)

Has His promise escaped your notice being a promise fulfilled at Calvary’s Mount?
